Synonym(s)
C57BL/6J-nmf172/J; JR#4818
Synopsis
Circling (bi-directional), head tossing behavior observed by weaning age; the mutants are deaf.

Abnormal Assay(s)
Assay: Auditory brain stem response (ABR)

   Domain(s): Auditory/Vestibular

Assay: Overt movement/posture

   Domain(s): Visible Mutants
Phenotype Description
The mutants exhibit (bi-directional) circling and head tossing behavior by 4 weeks of age, and of 3 mutants tested for Auditory brainstem responses (at 6 weeks of age) 2 were found to be deaf and 1 hearing impaired. Male or female mutants have been produced and the colony can be maintained through heterozygote or mutant breeding (although heterozygotes breed better than mutants).   (View video)
Pathology Report
Standard pathology work-up on two mutants (95 or 173 days of age), including serial sections of the ears of one animal (95 days of age) showed no abnormalities. Whole ear exam performed on a third mutant (47 days of age) also showed no abnormalities.

Comments
Please note: The majority of frozen NMF embryos is obtained through matings between homozygous (or heterozygous) mutant males and wild-type females; if recovery of mutants is requested, the mice will be shipped as soon as possible following wean without further phenotype or genotype testing. NMF embryos are supplied subject to the General Terms and Conditions of Sale posted at www.jaxmice.jax.org. For prices or further information, please inquire at srp@jax.org or nmf-mice@jax.org.
